Avon Goes Green

Town measured energy use, bought wind power and explores energy-saving options

Early this year the Town of Avon began purchasing 100% of its electricity from wind power.  The town’s energy use in 2006 included 2,482,478 kilowatt hours of electricity, 1,159,898 therms of natural gas and 26,107,696 gallons of water which emitted 3,729 tons of CO2 in the air.  Buying wind power from the local energy provider should drop the carbon footprint to about 1,700 tons per year.

In addition to using a more eco-friendly energy source, town leaders are now looking for ways to conserve energy and further diminish the town’s global warming input.  Starting small with new buses and increased recycling, the town will then consider projects with a bigger impact, like adding solar panels to buildings, upgrades to the rec center and adopting an expansive green building code.

What does this mean for you?  As a homeowner, you want to see your town leaders step up and make positive changes that will create a better future: a better future for you, your family, your community, and of course, your property’s value.  Avon’s proactive steps will help the environment and build a more enjoyable place for people to live, work, eat and have fun all in the same area.  We’ll all benefit from that.
