Last year an investment company out of Florida paid $9.5 million for a 680-acre piece of land north of Edwards called the Overlook.? The owner, Berlaimont Estates, plans to do what previous owners haven?t ? develop it. ?The owner has proposed developing the land into 19, 35-acre lots accessed by a paved, two land road through the White River National Forest.
?
The uneven U shaped parcel lies to the northwest of Berry Creek Road, behind Cordillera Valley Club, and is completely surrounded by public land. ?Its part of a huge panorama of open space, making for its beauty, its seclusion and the difficulty in developing it, which is why it remains undeveloped ? if it were cheap and easy someone would have already done it.?
?
The Forest Service can?t deny approval for the road ? the land is private and the developer has legal rights to build on it. ??What they can do is restrict where and what kind of road goes in.?
The initial public comment period collected input from 35 people ? most to say they oppose the project because they use the area for recreation and they don?t want to see miles of road destroy it.? Sadly, this scenario is not uncommon for where we live.? When an area goes undeveloped, like the open space in the middle of Homestead, people get used to enjoying it; so used to it that they get miffed when the owner finally says ?you can?t enjoy my property anymore?.? Yes, any road going through National Forrest is annoying, especially if it?s paved, but that owner has rights too.
