Bike to Work

Living in Eagle County has many benefits and the Government bailout just gave bikers another reason to use the Eagle County bike trails.  The US Government bailout bill crafted by Congress and the White House to stop the tailspin of the nation’s financial sector includes a federal tax benefit for people who commute to work by bicycle.

Starting in January, not the best time to bike to work from East Vail), workers who use bikes as their primary transportation mode to get to and from work will be eligible for a $20 a month, tax-free reimbursement from thier employers for bicycle expenses (purchase, store, repair and maintain).  In return, employers will be able to deduct the expense from their federal taxes.

So if high gas prices have got your down, hop on your bike and enjoy the mountain views while riding to work.  Pass go and collect $20 to maintain your bike.  It is not a huge amount, however, it will help raise awarenes of the benefits of bicycling, save energy, and offer employers tax write offs.   Everyone wins!
