Getting to Know the Vail Valley: Singletree

November 4th, 2008 Karen Gilbert Posted in Edwards, Singletree No Comments »

A sunny, dryland surrounded by sagebrush, Singletree, Edwards, is a refreshing change of scenery from the rest of the area’s more mountainous landscape. This dry setting is the inspiration for the southwestern architecture found across the hillside. The neighborhood flows up the hillside, offering varying elevations of amazing views to Vail’s back bowls, Arrowhead, New York Mountain and stunning sunsets.

My favorite part of Singletree is Balata restaurant in the Sonnenalp Golf Club. The outdoor patio has amazing views and is the most beautiful spot in the valley for a wedding (we had our reception there). The Sonnenalp Golf Club, which boasts an 18 hole championship course, and its clubhouse are the center point of the neighborhood. The club offers outdoor swimming and tennis and the community is filled with parks and bike paths.

Singletree, legally known as Berry Creek Ranch, is composed of five filings of properties. The first 2 include condos and townhomes, clustered around the golf course and club house, single family homes and duplexes.  The Fourth Filing is an area called Apoloosa Ridge, whose building guidelines require a Santa Fe style architecture. June Creek flows through the Third Filing, which is a access point for mountain biking and hiking trails through public land.

Can Edwards be joined?

September 20th, 2008 Gerlinde Debie Posted in Edwards No Comments »

New guidelines for Edwards’business district will encourage well marked street crossings, bike access, trail access, a uniform look and sidewalk cafes and awnings.  The Edwards design guidelines are supposed to create a *downtown* atmosphere for Edwards.  County planners hope hope to give the busy and rapidly growing unincorporated area to look and feel of a real town.  The proposed set of design guidelines would not be rules, but county commissioners would consider whether or not future developments gel with the guidelines when approving proposals. The guidelines ask for a design that is compatible with Eagle County mountain setting. Some of the goals of the design guidelines are to amke the area pedestrian friendly, take advantage of the river and give it a cohesive architectural look.  They also address problems like traffic congestion and lack of parking.  Much of the development in Edwards has turned out well, but the quick growth of the area hasn’t encouraged much uniformity. There is a bit of hodgepodge on those four corners.

Homestead funding plan fails

September 18th, 2008 Gerlinde Debie Posted in Edwards No Comments »

Homestead court club owners association resoundingly rejected a proposed 1 % real estate transfer fee.  Both the tax and the voting method had some homeowners up in arms.  To vote *yes* homeowners were asked to mail back the ballots.  To vote *No* they were supposed to do nothing.  Homestead has 810 property owners eligible to vote in that election.  Colorado law gives the board the green light to take the issue to a District court judge, who could order the fee. Homestead officials said they would not bring up the issue till 2010.

Battles over money are hardly new to Homestead.  In 2005 the Board spent 25K to help buy the the Eagle River Preserve, part of the former B&B gravel pit operation that used to operate in Edwards.  Prior to taht, the board had asked to increase dues to the association, which homeowners approved.

The West End finishes out Edwards Colorado with an urban, pedestrian flare

September 13th, 2008 Karen Gilbert Posted in Edwards, The West End Edwards., affordable housing No Comments »

With easy access to skiing through Arrowhead and all the amenities of bustling downtown, Edwards Colorado residents have a way of saying “Why go into Vail?”  The newest addition to the community, The West End project, will build out the 4th, the northwest, corner of downtown Edwards, giving us more reasons to stay and support our local community.  A residential and commercial development, The West End will blend city life conveniences with a casual mountain lifestyle.  The project is located 3 miles from skiing Beaver Creek, and 12 miles west of Vail, and will have a bus stop right out front to access both.

The West End offers two types of ownership opportunities.  Market rate units are the standard type and workforce are deed restricted, capping annual increase in property value.  The West End consists of 113 market rate and 72 workforce residences.  Both types of homes consist of studios, one, two and three-bedrooms with variations including dens, lofts and (my favorite) roof top patios.

Not only will the urban center emphasize pedestrian access, but it will provide a pedestrian core we lack in other areas.  A pedestrian square with fountains, fire pits and a kids’ play zone will serve as the main corridor to the Eagle River Preserve open space, trails, walkways and the Eagle River.   Bottom level homes in the two northern buildings will sit right on the open space, giving them the luxury of a 72 acre backyard.  Residents of The West End will enjoy a fitness center, outdoor hot tubs, and underground assigned parking and storage units.

It’s not just locals that have fallen in love with Edwards.  Read a New York Times blog Down To Earth in the High Country.
