Just in time for next month's Burton U.S. Open Championships, Vail's Superpipe in Golden Peak is now open. The Superpipe, with its 22-foot-high walls, is North America's largest.
When the athletes hit the pipe next month, they will soar 15-18 feet out of the pipe. That's flying 40 feet off the ground. Although daunting in size, the larger pipes are actually safer. Although the amount of air is hard to comprehend, the larger pipes allow for more room for the athletes to learn and more room for the athletes to make big mistakes.
Living in Vail, Colorado since September has been an incredible experience! In Vail, you find yourself spending the majority of your time outdoors on the mountain or with others socializing at one of the top restaurants in the valley. With so many fun activities one can do, there is little time spent on the couch watching television.
My all time favorite thing to do in Vail is ski. Vail mountain has some of the best skiing terrain in the world. There are more than 5,200 acres of skiable terrain with Vail mountain's peak elevation at 11,570 feet. Even though, in 2010-2011 ski-season over 1,750,000 skiers and snowboarders shredded this mountain, the amount of open terrain here was plenty of space for every single person to ride freely.
It is no sercret that the success of Vail Resorts is highly dependent on snow conditions, and the rocky start to the 2012 ski season was reflected in the early season's financial report. However, despite these hardships, Vail Resorts' latest financial report shows gains in the ski season metrics through Sunday compared to the same time last year. Though the challenging early season has set the company back in terms of following the financial guidance it put in place in September.
Skier visits are up 2% while revenues from lift tickets, ski school, dining and retail were up double digits from last year. Even with the early season setback, the report shows that once the more typical winter conditions returned in mid-December, visitation and guest spending increased--especially during the holidays.
You may often have wondered ... how many lifts does Vail Mountain actually have? Is it possible to ski them all in one day? Vail Resorts posts they have 31 lifts but this includes 7 surface lifts - 6 "magic carpets" and 1 poma near Two Elk Lodge.
If you are up to the challenge, the list includes 24 lifts including the Mongolia Poma. Vail Mountain's Epic Mix will track your progress on each of these lifts and track your vertical feet skied. You'll see all of the amazing Vail Back Bowls, Blue Sky Basin, Game Creek Bowl and every lift on the frontside of Vail Mountain. Celebrate Vail's 50th birthday by seeing every lift mountain has to offer.
Vail Luxury Property has adjusted to real estate conditions and with the New Year, 2013, the Vail real estate market is seeing new prices. As skiers and buyers return to Vail for great skiing they are experiencing fresh powder as well as fresh new prices on Vail homes and condominiums. Location sells, as well as views, and of course, price, when it comes to real estate in Vail. The 5 star location of the penthouse in Vail Village at One Willow Bridge Road, is close to the ski slopes, ice skating, restaurants, movie theater, art galleries, bowling, and bars. Does it look like a picture postcard?

Have you signed up for Travel Zoo notices in your area? I LOVE the fact that Travel Zoo will alert me to specials in the Vail Valley. The most recent is a $99 special at the Spa at Cordillera. A $200 value for $99 ... Massage or Facial ... good from January 2nd, 2013 through May 2, 2013. What a deal! It's not often establishments offer discounts during the ski season.
Think of a long day skiing the beautiful slopes of Vail, Beaver Creek or Arrowhead and then as an "Apres Ski" treat to yourself, you can have a long massage. Ah .... Bliss!
Have you been holding your breath? Are those powder skis still in the closet? Well, it's time to let out a gasp of excitement and pull those skis from the closet .... Vail's Back Bowls are opening! They are opening a month earlier than the 2011-2012 season. Yippee!! The majority of Sun Up and Sun Down bowls will be open for the holiday season and Vail Resorts is hopeful that an expected storm on Christmas eve will alllow them to open additional back bowl terrain. Skiing will be epic!
Open Snow, one of the many snowfall forecasting websites, is predicting up to 4 inches Monday day and up to 5 inches Monday night. Christmas day may be the day to get out on the slopes. Open those gifts early in the a.m. and then race out to hit the powder.
The quintessential log home in Vail, Colorado creates the picture perfect home for Christmas. Over the river and through the woods to Pilgrim Downs, only 15-20 minuets to Vail Resort Skiing. Vail real estate is unique and there are many beautiful homes and settings, a few even take your breath away, not from the lack of oxygen in the air, but for the exceptional design and attention to detail.
