The Vail Jazz Foundation brings it?s free Jazz Goes to School program to 4th and 5th graders throughout the county this week.? Almost 1,000 students will participate in this innovative and fully integrated approach to teaching music and social studies.? Tony Gulizia and several other professional musicians/educators, will visit 14 elementary schools and present interactive Jazz and American History lessons.?
?
This session is the third in a four part series that combines performances with discussions about the American history, geography and diversity that created jazz music.? Blending these subjects, the musicians/educators link social studies from the books and classrooms to music in a stimulating lesson.? The program also features popular children?s songs performed in jazz styles, demonstrating different instruments and allowing students to play them.?
?
After this lesson, which will focus on the 12 bar blues, students will work in groups to compose a 12 bar composition using the blues scale, lyrics and a rhyme scheme.? Putting together a medley of these compositions, The Jazz Goes to School Quintet will perform the students? work during the fourth and final session at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on April 13th.?
