Getting to Know the Vail Valley: Avon

The gateway to Beaver Creek, small town Avon has big city convenience

Just a couple exits down the I-70 from Vail, Avon is well known as the gateway to Beaver Creek.  For locals, it’s a stop on our weekly to do list as the home of the most price sensitive grocery & everything else stores in the Valley.  While other area of the valley shy away from big chain names, Avon proudly homes well known names like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Outback Steak House, Pier 1, Sports Authority and Radio Shack.  At the center of town, Nottingham Lake lends a beautiful and peaceful side to balance out the town and gives us a perfect place for community festivities including Colorado’s largest display of fireworks on the 4th of July.  Avon also offers a library, recreation center and plenty of pocket parks and playgrounds.

Not far from the lake the new gondola from the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa offers skier access to Beaver Creek Mountain without having to drive up to the lift.  In fact, the former skier shuttle from the parking lot at the bottom of Beaver Creek has been redirected to the new gondola so unless you want to pay for parking up top, you’ll end up checking out the new ride.

Moving forward with the newly developed master plan, the town will incorporate the Westin Resort into a pedestrian friendly downtown area, including a Main Street, something Avon has always lacked.

For the homebuyer, Avon is an excellent location within walking or bus ride distance to everything.  There are numerous condos and town houses around the lake and near the gondola that are perfect for second home owners, rentals and locals wanting to be in the middle of it all.  Across the interstate from Eagle-Vail, a new development is under works that will result in 2,400 homes, a cultural and recreation center, a new school and over 500 acres of open space and parks.
