Ski powder in the morning and play 9 in the afternoon
Golf in the Vail Valley, in March
While most people think of skiing when they think of the Vail Valley; in the spring it can also mean great golf too. Starting in late March, golf courses in western Eagle County start preparing for the first rounds of the year. Cotton Ranch, located just 45 minutes from Vail is typically the first course to open in the Vail Valley. Towns like Gypsum, where Cotton Ranch is located, typically start seeing warmer temperatures in March and this allows them to get the courses playable far earlier than the courses located closer to Vail.
Some of the best skiing of the season is usually found at this same time of year, with March and April being some of the wettest months of the year. It is not uncommon for both locals and guests alike to ski for a few hours in the morning; and then head to the course and play nine or more holes of golf. Although only a short drive away many are surprised by the drastic difference in climate. I personally have skiied in the morning and been playing golf in shorts later that very day.
Cotton Ranch and the other courses that open early all offer the true mountain golf experience. Beautliful views, soaring tee shots, and abundant wildlife are definitely the norm, even in March. If you happen to be heading to the Vail area this spring and want to take a break from skiing, golf is certainly a great option to keep in mind.
