Summer Fun around the Vail Valley
Once the ski season ends it is easy to find lots of summer activities
The old saying in Vail is ‘we came here for the skiing, but we live here for the summers.’ We write about all the wonderful golf courses we have in the Valley, but if that is not your sport, there are plenty of other sporting activities to keep you occupied. Rafting, kayaking, tennis, biking and hiking, fishing and touring all add up to so many choices it is hard to make a decision.
One of the most enjoyable and relaxing ways to spend a long weekend is at Lake Powell in Utah. The lake is the first dammed up section of the Colorado River and is 160 miles long, and goes all the way to Page Arizona, which is where the Grand Canyon begins. Just having returned from four days floating on the lake, one can not be awed by the sheer beauty of this magnificent location, which is essentially the beginning of the Grand Canyon. Rent a houseboat or just camp on the sandy beaches, build a camp fire and watch the stars pop out in the millions. It is totally untouched by development as the National Park Service controls the entire shoreline, which includes 98 canyons to explore and hike into. Bass fishing is the best with several tournaments each year, and the water skiing on total ‘glass’ is the best anywhere in the region.
