Telemark Skiing in Vail
Great snow makes for great turns
What a great way to start the new year in Vail, Colorado! With over 3 feet of fresh snow, the skiing was fantastic just after the crowds left town in early January. As telemark skiers know, it only takes a little snow to get the coveted face shot. And we were lucky enough to have acres of the light powder snow, providing the early risers with smiles galore.
I can not recall in recent years three such glorious days back to back in Vail’s Back Bowls. After a short wait at the Vista Bahn, we were treated to first tracks on Apres Vous, Headwall and Ghengis Khan. My friends and I were hooting it up due to the sheer pleasure of making the free heeled turn, while trying to breathe as the snow shot over our heads.
The fluidity and athleticism of telemark skiing continue to captivate me after living here for more than a decade. The joy of speeding down a pristine snow field while bouncing from ski to ski is unmatched by my other outdoor activities. These past powder days have reminded me of why I live here, and of how beautiful a place Vail really is.
