Vail redevelopment plans
For the Town of Vail, 2006 will be remembered as the year of decisive leadership and action. There was the special election in July in which voters overwhelmingly ratified Town Council approval of the Crossroads redevelopment. There was the decision to require wildlife-resistant trash containers to help protect surrounding wildlife and an agreement to pursue condemnation, if needed, to secure a new site for a West Vail fire station. There was the bold use of a helicopter to remove trees infested by the pine beetle to help create a defensible space between the town boundaries and the forest. Then there was the decision to solicit proposals for redevelopment of the LionsHead parking structure. And, to stay connected with the community, there were public invitations throughout the year to assist in the development of various master plans, including the Vail 20/20: Focus on the Future strategic plan and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan sponsored jointly by the Vail Recreation District and the town.
All the while, record redevelopment continued to challenge the town’s resources. Despite those challenges, the town received welcome news in the fall that Vail had been named the No. 1 ski resort by readers of SKI Magazine for the 14th time in 19 years, a well-earned distinction for the community.
